SPECTRAL
In the wilderness of the American West, certain minerals and organic materials emit visible light when subjected to ultraviolet radiation. From collapsed lava tubes lined with microbial mats to high elevations where lichens thrive, a strange fluorescence occurs that is otherwise imperceptible to us.
Working in near-total darkness with a UV light source, these photographs are the product of a direct interaction between my light and the landscape's response. The familiar surface of the earth becomes something I no longer recognize.
